Commissioned by the Northern Iowa Youth Orchestra, Sinfonietta for Strings keeps young players entertained without sacrificing quality, and gives them the opportunity to grow without asking the impossible. The first movement is in sonata form, with a danceable first theme group, a lyrical second theme area, a full development, and an unusual recapitulation. The second movement gives the spotlight to the basses, while smaller members of the string family create a placid texture, full of extended techniques. The third movement embraces twentieth-century compositional techniques and revisits themes from both earlier movements before ending, literally and metaphorically, on a high note.
MIDI renditions of the first and third movements are available upon request.
