Heavy metal often intentionally overwhelms a listener’s ability to absorb what they’re hearing. Scales and meter change rapidly, the guitar work is blisteringly fast, and pervading distortion adds dimension to the aural experience. As with Schoenberg, the high degree of seemingly arbitrary complexity begins to sound like chaos, but with very a specific aesthetic goal. This string quartet transmutes heavy metal into the classical world, providing technical challenges and new sounds to experienced ensembles.
